YOU HAVE EMBARKED ON AN ADVENTURE THAT WILL BECOME YOUR SUCCESS STORY…AND EVERY SUCCESS STORY NEEDS A VILLAIN
Although we have a strength based philosophy, we have found that athletes who can move their weaknesses to at least a neutral level have greater success achieving consistent peak performance and utilizing their potential. Think about this for a moment…what if all you did was eliminate the negative emotions and destructive behaviors that hinder your success? What a huge impact this would have on your results. This alone has the ability to catapult you into another category of athlete. So I strongly encourage you to put some good time and thought into creating your villain.
The purpose of creating a villain is to identify the things that are preventing you from maximizing your potential. Regardless of which demons haunt you, or when they show their ugly head, they affect your results. You need to round them all up and define them as the tactics of one creature, your villain. Then you can learn how to stand toe to toe against your villain and defeat it along with the many tactics it will use against you.
Villain tactics are the problems, challenges, and frustrations that have the most detrimental impact on your performance or personally affect you in the most negative manner. They are your negative emotions and destructive behaviors that do not align with the results you are striving so hard to achieve. Determine your villain tactics by answering the initial chapter question as it applies to your top 3 season results. A particular villain tactic may be detrimental for multiple season results but choose the most pertinent result to ensure laser focus. Establish the psycle section (situation, thought, feeling, action, result) for each villain tactic. You will also want to determine when each villain tactic takes place. A villain tactic can occur during training, lead-up, warm-up, competition, post competition, or any combination thereof.
This is undoubtedly a very difficult chapter. It requires you to dive into the dark hidden places that are not enjoyable to visit, in order to shed light on the areas that are preventing you from reaching your athletic potential. Once you answer the chapter questions, you will have bundled up all of your negative emotions and destructive behaviors to create one monstrous and beastly villain. Then it will be time to face your villain and learn exactly how to defeat it in battle…which is explained in the next chapter.
